The doubling crystal doubles the frequency (halves the wavelength) of the laser light.
Currently, a beta barium borate (BBO) crystal is used to obtain 255 nm UV light from the
510 nm output of the dye laser. It is rotated under computer control in a gimbal mount
to stay phase matched with the incoming laser beam.
